R.G. Moyles
Salvation Army Historian
Welcome

Welcome to my web-site.
My aim is to acquaint you
with my writing about
The Salvation Army, a list
of my books being featured
on the Writings page.

At the moment I am
writing a book, for the
 American Territory, on
'William Booth in America'
 which will be published in
October by Crest Books
at The Salvation Army's National
Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. This book will describe
William Booth's six visits to the United States (1886 to
1907). But, apart from showing why he was there (to
promote the Army, boost his 'Darkest England' scheme and so forth) it also tries to recreate the personality of the General by offering vivid accounts of his preaching style, his personal habits, and how he was received by the American public. It will also show how the Army in the United States changed in the period from 1886 to 1907.

In this book I look at eleven events (or issues) in Salvation Army history and examine how historians have treated them, offering some suggestions (my suggestions) as to how they should have been treated. Some of the topics I deal with are: 'Did Catherine Booth say "Never!"', 'Avoiding Hero Worship: Assessing the Role of William Booth,' 'The Salvation Army as a Wild-Wooder', 'The Salvation Army and the Submerged tenth: Demythologizing the Past.' The book will be of special interest to Army historians and students of its history.
